Hawaii is famous for its pineapples. The pinapple was likely brought to Hawaii by Europeans as early as 1527. So it wasn't grown by the ancient ancient Hawaiians, but still, nearly 500 years ago is sort of ancient. So it is a fitting symbol of Hawaii. The islands of Hawaii had the ideal climate for growing pineapples and the early plantations imported many foreign workers adding many different cultures and flavors to Hawaii that makes today's Hawaii so unique.
The original was a hand pulled lithographic print made off of an artist created polyester printing plate. This print was made using a stipple technique on the plate to create a form of shading even though the lithographic printing method only prints one solid color for each mark. The artist also created a slight haze around each dot by inking with a very oily ink so some of the color seeped into the open spaces around the dots.
