Petroglyphs are graphic "drawings" on lava rocks made by carving or scratching lines and dots into the rock surface. There are over 10,000 petrogyphs in Hawaii. We don't know for sure what a lot of these mean, but it is thought that many of the carvings are records of births and other significant events in the lives of the people who lived there long ago. Here I have depicted a family grouping, a man (a canoe paddler) and his wife with a child.
The original was a hand pulled lithographic print made off of an artist created polyester printing plate. This print was made using a stipple technique on the plate to create a form of shading even though the lithographic printing method only prints one solid color for each mark. The artist also created a slight haze around each dot by inking with a very oily ink so some of the color seeped into the open spaces around the dots.
