The hibiscus (yellow), is the Hawaii state flower. It is part of the plant family Malvaceae. Many of the hibiscus seen in Hawaii are actually hybids of Chinese hibiscus. But Hawaii does have 7 or 9 versions of hibiscus that are native to Hawaii from ancient days. 2 of them are likely extinct now. Can't be found any more. The yellow hibiscus is one of the seven native versions found nowadays. Hibiscus are interesting flowers with their crinkled petals and huge stamen, they make a good art subject. I have done this print with a basic shaded (with stippling) plate and then I can add color via hand painting or by a color plate to make a number of different colors of the same flower design.
The original was a hand pulled lithographic print made off of an artist created polyester printing plate. This print was made using a stipple technique on the plate to create a form of shading even though the lithographic printing method only prints one solid color for each mark. The artist also cre...
