Ancient Hawaiians made sure to bring bamboo plants with them as they colonized the islands because it was so useful. It can be used as a water carrier and to build the decks and structures on the sailing canoes so it was invaluable on ocean voyages. It is also useful for building, posts, bridges, rafts, gutters, floats, hives, canes, flutes, masts, furniture, utensils, cups, sharp knives, agricultural tools, ladders, ornaments, toys and fishing poles. Split bamboo can be made into mats, hats, screens, baskets, fans, umbrellas, brushes, paper, ropes, roofing tiles, wall mats, or as a part of the sleds of old Hawai`i, called holua.
