Hawaiian islands are all volcanic islands. Many shores are still all volcanic rock, but in some places the waves have pounded the rock into sand and pieces of coral have been pounded into white sand filling the spaces between lava outcrops with lovely sand beaches. Here I show a lava rock outcrop with a koa paddle leaning against the rock. On the sand lies a conch shell, often used by ancient Hawaiians to signal over long distances. Perhaps an ancient canoe paddler has just called to his canoe mates just offshore and is now waiting for them to come and pick him up.
The original was a hand pulled lithographic print made off of an artist created polyester printing plate. This print was made using a stipple technique on the plate to create a form of shading even though the lithographic printing method only prints one solid color for each mark. The artist also created a slight haze around each dot by inking with a very oily ink so some of the color seeped into the open spaces around t...
