Your image gets printed directly onto a sheet of 1/16" thick aluminum. The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back. The ancient Hawaiians used large double hulled canoes such as this design to sail between islands. They could be as long as 60 to 80 feet long. And if properly equipped, could sail 2,000 miles on a voyage. Modern versions, such as the Hokulea have recreated the original voyages from Tahiti to Hawaii and have now gone beyond, sailing around the world. Not bad for a "stone-aged" society.
The original was a hand pulled lithographic print made off of an artist created polyester printing plate. This print was made using a stipple technique on the plate to create a form of shading even though the lithographic printing method only prints one solid color for each mark. The artist also created a slight haze around each dot by inking with a very oily ink so some of the color seeped into the open spaces around the dots.
